Rockstar Games released an official “Extended Look” at Grand Theft Auto 6 on Netflix on August 27, 2026. The presentation confirmed that the game includes a weight system where food consumption and exercise visibly alter the bodies of the protagonists, Lucia and Jason. According to Eurogamer, these mechanics mean that overeating causes characters to gain weight while consistent gym use builds muscle tone. These systems return to the style seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas but were absent from Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5. The game also accounts for “multi-day benders” or extended periods spent on the run, which reportedly have a visible impact on character appearance, according to Eurogamer.

World scale and environmental detail

The map for Grand Theft Auto 6 is twice the size of Grand Theft Auto 5 and three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, according to Kotaku. Rockstar has increased its development resources by doubling its team since the release of Red Dead Redemption 2 to provide more detailed NPCs. These characters feature diverse body shapes, ages, heights, and cosmetic details such as tattoos and piercings.

Rockstar utilized a dedicated research team in Miami during development to build what stylist Jillian Carr describes as a “fashion ecosystem,” where Vice City is “built around vanity” due to celebrity culture and social media trends, according to Eurogamer. The game features various activities including scuba diving, jet skiing, kayaking, dirt bike riding, base jumping, street racing, and dancing at clubs. Players can also interact with the world through dog petting, browsing social media apps on mobile phones, and watching TV.

Protagonist interactions and narrative choices

Players control a Bonnie and Clyde-style duo, Jason and Lucia. While they begin in a romantic relationship, players can choose to develop that romance or maintain a friendship based on their actions. According to Kotaku, ignoring texts from one partner negatively impacts the relationship, while joint activities improve it. Players can perform small interactions like holding hands or holding open doors for each other.

Switching between Jason and Lucia is described as seamless, allowing players to swap during events like parachuting off a tower. However, PC Gamer notes that the point-of-view may be restricted at certain points if the story demands it. Some missions are character-specific, meaning only one protagonist can perform certain tasks.

Technical details and release logistics

The game is scheduled for release on November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X. Rockstar has not provided a PC release date or specific information regarding Grand Theft Auto Online. The Netflix showcase was a timed exclusive, appearing on the platform six hours before being uploaded to Rockstar’s YouTube channel.

The game features an honor system influenced by good deeds, such as throwing away trash, and bad deeds like excessive violence. Car theft involves more complexity, with some vehicles requiring electronic locks and key cloners. Combat options include incapacitating enemies by wounding them or knocking weapons away rather than always using lethal force.

Critical reception and player response

Initial reactions to the footage are mixed. Some players on social media praised the physics and realism, while others compared the game’s aesthetic to Red Dead Redemption 2 or Grand Theft Auto 5. According to Kotaku, some users have criticized the in-game HUD as looking “ass,” despite praising the lighting. Additionally, a segment of the community has expressed intent to boycott the release because it will not be available on disc format.

Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson stated that he completed an 80-hour playthrough earlier this year, which included optional content with narrative consequences, according to Polygon. The studio also confirmed that while the game maintains its tradition of broad social and cultural satire, it will not feature specific political commentary regarding Donald Trump’s rise to power due to the long development cycle.
